Mudra exercises re-train the sense perceptions and
introduce direct non-dual perception of the sense
realms. They also include intensive physical
exercises that retrain the entire body.
Mudra's effect is to invigorate one's sitting practice, providing a journey toward direct perception of the nature of mind. Ironically, such so-called "inner" experiences become the basis for propelling the practitioner into more, not less, engaged action.
Thus, Mudra not only provides direct glimpses into non-conceptual mind, it also offers contemplative tools that help practitioners establish "engaged lifestyles" in which one's total way of life becomes increasingly aligned with meditative insight. Mudra is perhaps the least known practice introduced by Trungpa Rinpoche, predating his formal presentation of Vajrayana and Shambhala in the United States. It still preserves the flavor of those raw early years.
